The Woman in Black was clearly not the
first movie that played by Daniel Radcliffe apart from Harry Potter. However,
The Woman in Black gives a special impression considering that this is the
first movie starred by Daniel Radcliffe right after the last series of Harry
Potter. The interesting part of The Woman in Black is Radcliffe chose a horror
movie to prove his existence of acting after Harry Potter. The Woman in Black
is not too special, but Radcliffe’s appearance clearly proves that he is ready
to come out of Harry Potter shadows which have made his name. The Woman in
Black take 1900’s as the background story. The story tells a young lawyer,
Arthur Kipps (Radcliffe) who were assigned to go to a small town called Crythin
Gifford and resolve issues concerning the ownership of Eel Marsh House.
In The Woman in Black, the new owner of the
property just died. Arthur himself was haunted by the death of his wife after
giving birth to their first child. The death of his wife has made the figure of
Arthur to be more introverts, including to his own son. Desiring to finish the
job – which he had to do because of economic demand in The Woman in Black,
Arthur later met many oddities in Crythin Gifford. Arthur had variety
strange things that seem unacceptable to common sense. Gradually the story in
The Woman in Black make Arthur began to explore the mysteries of the village
and the tragedy happened in Eel Marsh House. At the same time, he was trying to
avoid a curse that might take the life of his son. Unfortunately, The Woman in
Black is a type of movie that use more traditional ways of delivering the story
– both in narrative and drama in an attempt to frighten the audience.
Since
the beginning the movie started, The Woman in Black has dark atmosphere that
helps to establish the horror atmosphere of the story. This dark atmosphere was
supported by the visual and the music. The Woman in Black also relies on scenes
showing a surprise jump scare both audio and visual. The strength of The Woman
in Black obviously is the appearance of the lead actor. Although it is a little bit
difficult to imagine Radcliffe to portray the character of a father figure, he
was able to overcome these obstacles with a natural acting ability and his
character makes it easier to be trusted. Apart from the dramatic appearance of
the lead actor, there is absolutely nothing special about The Woman in Black. The
Woman in Black is a compelling presentation but it will not give you a
profound impression.
